How and where to apply

How to apply

For general advice on applying to REU programs, Dr. Kirkpatrick wrote a document with tips for a strong application.

For KU's Physics and Astronomy REU, the application form will ask for basic demographic information and short essays (2000 characters or less, about 280-500 words) for the following prompts:

  • Describe your educational preparation. Discuss classes taken, techniques learned, and any pertinent extracurricular activities.
  • Describe a challenge you have faced (i.e., a difficult class, a research problem, etc.) and what steps you took to overcome the challenge.
  • Why are you interested in completing an REU? What excites you about KU?
  • What area(s) of physics and astronomy excite you the most? (This does not need to be an area that our REU supports.) Describe why this area interests you, some of the open research questions associated with this area, and some of the current findings.
You will also have to list the top 3 research projects you want to work on this summer.

Per the rules of NSF (who provides the funding for this program), you must be a US citizen or permanent resident to participate.

Please have two letters of recommendation sent to physastroREU@ku.edu by February 15, 2024. At least one letter needs to be from a physics/astronomy/math professor.
